Overview:

In this web exercise, you will be learning about Celcius and Fahrenheit, weather maps, and terminology used in Norwegian weather forecasts. Do the exercises highlighted in green below and write the answers on a separate sheet of paper.

2. Weather maps

  • Review the words for weather conditions listed below. View the Nettvik site and see the commonly used weather symbols in Norway.

    • sol: sun | perioder med sol: periods with sun | oppholdsvær: dry weather
    • skyet: cloudy | delvis skyet: partly cloudy |
    • skydekke: cloud cover (skiftende skydekke)
    • nedbør: precipitation (lite nedbør) | regn: rain | regnbyger: rain showers
    • torden: thunder | lyn: lightning
    • tåke: fog | hagl: hail | sludd: sleet
    • snø: snow | snøbyger: snow showers
    • bris: breeze | kuling: wind, breeze | storm: gale, storm

  • Exercise 2.1: Look at the weather map of Norway. What are the current weather conditions and temperatures for the cities of Oslo, Kristiansand, Bergen, Trondheim, Bodø, and Tromsø.
  • Exercise 2.2: Choose a Norwegian city from the list, look up the long term forecast, and write it down.
  • Exercise 2.3: Look at the maps showing the maximum and minimum temperatures in Norway. Where is it the coldest in Norway? Where is it the warmest?

3. Weather forecasts:

  • Exercise 3.1: In addition to the words for weather conditions which you have just reviewed, there are many other stock words and phrases used in Norwegian weather forecasts. Learn the expressions listed below.

    Places and Directions

  • på kysten: on the coast (liten kuling på kysten)
  • i ytre strøk: in outlying areas (snøbyger i ytre strøk)
  • i kyststrøk: in coastal areas (kuling i sørlige kyststrøk)
  • i utsatte strøk: in exposed areas (stiv kuling i utsatte strøk)
  • i indre strøk: in inner areas (kaldere i indre strøk)

  • sør: south | sørlig: southern
  • nord: north (nordvest bris) | nordlig: northern (nordlig bris)
  • vest: west | vestlig: westerly
  • øst: east | østlig: easterly

    Hedging and Describing: Adverbs and Adjectives

  • stort sett: mainly, mostly (stort sett pent vær, stort sett uendrede temperaturer)
  • for det meste: mainly, mostly (for det meste skiftende bris)
  • forholdsvis: relatively (forholdsvis kaldt)
  • til dels: partly (til dels pent vær, til dels regn på kysten)
  • delvis: partly (delvis skyet)
  • enkelte: some (enkelte snøbyger)
  • av og til: now and then, sometimes (av og til liten kuling på kysten)
  • ellers: otherwise (Ellers pent, kaldt vær)

  • utrygt: unstable (utrygt for regnbyger)
  • skiftende: shifting, variable (skiftende bris, skiftende skydekke)
  • stigende: increasing (litt stigende temperatur)
  • synkende: decreasing (synkende temperatur)
  • minkende: decreasing (kuling på kysten, minkende om kvelden)
  • uendrede: unchanging (uendrede temperaturer)

  • Exercise 3.2: View the current weather forecast for Norway. Print the page and write a translation of 3 of the 6 regional forecasts.
  • Exercise 3.3: Find a computer in the lab that runs Microsoft Windows. Go to the TV2 live site and view/listen to today's live weather forecast. Write a summary of what you heard in English.
