Faculty Retreat - Spring 2004

The philosophy department received a Teaching and Curricular Development grant to hold a retreat with Jorge Garcia on philosophical issues related to race and ethnicity. Participants, in addition to Garcia, included Jil Evans, Karen Gervais, Geoff Gorham, Jeanine Grenberg, Vicki Harper, Paola Kindred, Ed Langerak, Ronald Loeffler (Carleton College), Gordon Marino, Anthony Rudd, Charles Taliaferro, Walt Stromseth, and Corliss Swain.

Before the retreat, participants read a number of papers and chapters by Garcia, including some from his forthcoming book, The Heart of Racism, in addition to chapters from other authors. Follow-up activities included in-depth discussions about the curricular and pedagogical implications of ideas shared at the retreat, as well as a brief brochure for wider faculty discussion and application of some of the concepts in course syllabi and teaching.

Faculty enjoy a walk between sessions at the 2004 retreat.
