Deadlines are stated but they are flexible for the HERE program. There are multiple academic levels in the HERE program, i.e., entering freshman, undergraduate, post-BS, or a graduate student.

Find information about the Department of Energy's Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) as well as an electronic application which can complete online. The SULI program is for undergraduates and graduating seniors. At this site students can also find applications for the Community College Institute (CCI) and the Pre-Service Teacher (PST) programs.

Through one- to three-year summer internships, NESLS offers engineering student on-the-job educational and research opportunities at a multidisciplinary national laboratory.

The German Physical Society (DPG) has notified the APS Office of International Affairs of a new program for Canadian and American undergraduate physics students. The program is called "RISE" Research Internships in Science and Engineering, and provides stipends for US students to spend a summer for study/research in a German university or research institute. Internships & REU Programs for 2009
The University of Alabama at Birmingham has REUs in Experimental and Computational Materials Research. The projects include high pressure materials research, thin film growth and characterization, microelectronic materials, nano-materials, laser materials, bioceramics and biopolymers, planetary materials, modeling of gas phase chemistry and surfaces in materials growth, and computer simulation of materials. The American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Summer Undergraduate Fellowship Program is designed to provide opportunities for undergraduates students to gain experience in medical physics by performing research in a medical physics laboratory or assisting with clinical service at a clinical facility. APS and IBM will again co-sponsor a research internship program for undergraduate women in physics and related fields in the summer of 2009. Applications must be submitted by February 15, 2009 using the web-based format. Please note that letters of recommendation should be emailed directly to IBM. The 2009 Summer Research Opportunity Programs (SROP) at CIC Universities is now taking applications. These are fantastic research opportunities for students from all over the country. The programs provide a fairly generous summer stipend plus room and board assistance. More information can be found at http://www.cic.net/Home/Students/SROP/Introduction.aspx . You can apply on-line and indicate areas of academic research interest and indicate which university campuses they're most interested in (for summer research). They've started accepting applications as of Nov. 1. The deadline is February 10, 2009--you are advised to apply early to enhance chances of getting a position.
Brigham Young University has REU's available in a number of areas including optics, computer modeling, plasmas, solid state and thin film science, acoustics, theory and astronomy. The application deadline is February 10, 2009. You may apply online at http://reu.byu.edu .
Caltech's Amgen Scholars program is geared towards students in biology and biotechnology fields. Some of these fields include biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, chemical and biomolecular engineering, and chemistry. Caltech's MURF program aims to increase the participation of underrepresented students (such as African American, Hispanic, Native American, and Puerto Rican) in science and engineering gradutate programs. The Research Internships in Science and Engineering Program (RISE) at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), run by the Materials Research Laboratory, provides an opportunity for students from all over the country to travel to UCSB and work in a research laboratory for 10 weeks. Internships span an array of fields including materials, chemistry, biochemistry, physics, computer science, and mechanical engineering. The Cornell Center for Materials Research is offering a summer program with stipend. Students will work with Cornell faculty on interdisciplinary materials research projects involbing chemistry, physics, materials science and engineering disciplines, and will also participate in an organized program of lectures, mini-courses, laboratory visits and recreational activities. The Solar Physics research group of the Montana State University Department of Physics will offer REU positions during the summer. Most projects in this program involve analysis of data from solar space missions which are suitable for most students at the sophomore or junior level. The National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center will be conducting a summer student program for undergraduates at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rice. National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) Summer Student Research Assistants conduct research under the supervision of NRAO staff at one of three NRAO sites ( Socorro , NM ; Green Bank, WV; Charlottesville , VA ) on a project in the supervisor's area of expertise.
