Office of Science and Technology Policy Executive Office of the President 2012 Summer Student Volunteer Program. Being a Student Volunteer at OSTP provides an opportunity to experience science and technology policy firsthand while working closely with senior policy makers on a variety of tasks and projects. Student Volunteers intern with OSTP staff on a variety of science and technolgy initiatives. Applicants must be US citizens. The Summer 2012 application deadline was the end of November 2011. Full Proposal Deadline Date: June 1, 2012. Deadline for REU Site proposals requiring access to Antarctica. All other REU Site proposals must be submitted to the August REU deadline. First Friday in June, Annually thereafter.

The American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) Summer Undergraduate Fellowship Program is designed to provide opportunities for undergraduates students to gain experience in medical physics by performing research in a medical physics laboratory or assisting with clinical service at a clinical facility. Each applicant must complete the AAPM-provided Student application and ensure that it and all required supplementary information are returned to AAPM Headquarters by the due date, February 1, 2012. APS/IBM Research Internship for Undergraduate Women. The American Physical Society and IBM co-sponsor a research internship program for undergraduate women. The goal is to encourage women students to pursue graduate studies in science and engineering.The internships are salaried positions typically 10 weeks long at one of three IBM research locations (San Jose, CA, Austin, TX, or Yorktown Heights, NY), and give the opportunity to work closely with an IBM mentor. The Watson lab has a full range of research, as does the Almaden lab, and the Austin lab focuses on software and systems. Eligibility requirements are:
female with sophomore or junior standing at a U.S. college or university at the time of application, majoring in chemistry, physics, materials science or engineering, computer science or engineering, chemical, electrical, mechanical engineering, or biology, if it has an emphasis on one of the other areas listed, must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and there is no citizenship restriction. CRESST operates its internship program in conjunction with other
similar programs at NASA/GSFC. The CRESST partnership is planning to select between six and fifteen
students, on a competitive basis, to participate in summer internships
on-site at GSFC for the summer of 2012. These are nominally 10-week
paid internships ($5,000 for undergrads and $6,000 for graduate-level
students), primarily but not exclusively for undergraduate level
college students. It is expected all students would be attending U.S.
universities. Students need not be U.S. citizens or permanent
residents. However, citizens from designated countries, are not able
to work on-site at GSFC, and therefore are ineligible for this
internship program. The standard internship period for 2012 will be

Deadlines are stated but they are flexible for the HERE program. There are multiple academic levels in the HERE program, i.e., entering freshman, undergraduate, post-BS, or a graduate student.

The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 17 DOE National Laboratories. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects related to ongoing programs. Must be currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student at an accredited institution, and also have completed at least one year as a matriculating undergraduate student at the time of applying. http://www.orise.orau.gov/doescholars - The Department of Energy Scholars Program offers summer internships with stipends of up to $650 per week depending on academic status to undergraduates, graduate students and post graduates at accredidted institutes of higher education. Majors accepted include: engineering; physical sciences; environmental sciences; computer science and information technology; physics; program managment; math statistics; safety and health; accounting and finance; law; and other related discipline areas. Requirements include: US Citizenship; 16 years of age; and a cumulative GPA of 2.90/4.00. Internships provide participants with the opportunity to conduct hands-on research while showcasing their education, talent and skills. Kitt Peak National Obseratory(KPNO), a division of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO), in Tucson has REU positions available for the summer of 2012. The REU program provides an exceptional opportunity for undergraduates to engage in substantive research activities with scientists working in the forefront of contemporary astrophysics. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is offering an REU program for the summer in High-Energy-Density Physics (hydrodynamics, atomic physics, plasma physics, inertial confinement physics, astrophysics or radiation/particle transport). LPI (Lunar and Planetary Institute)/NASA's Undergraduate Research Program is a premier summer research opportunity for upper-level students, who will work one-on-one with a scientist at the LPI or at the NASA Johnson Space Center. College undergraduates with at least 50 semester hours of credit interested in pursuing a career in the sciences are eligible. Relevant fields of study include the natural sciences, engineering, computer sciences, and mathematics. Applicants will be considered for appointment without regard to race, creed, color, sex, national origin, age, handicap status, or other nonmerit factors. PGGURP (NASA's Planetary Geology and Geophysics Undergraduate Research Program pairs qualified undergraduates with NASA-funded investigators at research locations around the country for 8 weeks during the summer. The National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center will be conducting a summer student program for undergraduates at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rice. Research may be conducted in atmospheric science, radio astronomy, or planetary radar astronomy. Undergraduates who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and who will be enrolled in a bachelor's degree program (part‑ or full‑time) during Fall 2012 are eligible. The laboratories of the National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (NNIN) will conduct a joint REU program during the summer of 2012. Opportunities exist in all areas of the country, across a broad range of science and technology. The online application deadline is February 8, 2012. National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) Summer Student Research Assistants conduct research under the supervision of NRAO staff at one of three NRAO sites ( Socorro , NM ; Green Bank, WV; Charlottesville , VA ) on a project in the supervisor's area of expertise. The project may involve and aspect of astronomy, including original research, instrumentation, telescope design, or astronomical software development. We are recruiting now, and until February 15, 2012, for the National Science Foundation (NSF) High Performance Computing Applications Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program: Computational Fluid Dynamics (HARP) at University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, for summer 2012. Engineering or Science undergraduates with a minimum 3.0 GPA and a strong interest in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and High Performance Computing (HPC) should apply. All work will be done from the campus at Honolulu, HI. The students will receive a generous stipend, and travel to and from Hawai‘i will be provided. The National Undergraduate Fellowship Program in Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy Sciences provides outstanding undergraduates with an opportunity to conduct cutting edge research in plasma science and fusion energy. Students selected for this fellowship will take part in a nine-week-long research project in order to study plasma science research and fusion research in particular. Selected students receive a stipend of $4,800 in addition to funding for transportation to the research site. Through one- to three-year summer internships, NESLS offers engineering students and faculty on-the-job educational and research opportunities at a multidisciplinary national laboratory. The ORNL NESLS program is open to faculty and full- or part-time engineering students enrolled at a U.S. university at the time of appointment. Deadline for summer applications is February 28, 2012.

The Yale CRISP Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) is supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) as a Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) program. The CRISP REU fellowship program provides students with the opportunity to conduct team-based interdisciplinary materials research through both academic year and summer research opportunities for undergraduate students - academic year REUs are available for students at Yale and SCSU. During the course of this eight-week summer research program, fellows conduct research under the advisement of a university faculty mentor and postdoctoral fellows and graduate students within the research group. The REU experience is based on a very successful collaborative team-based model developed as one of CRISP's signature programs (MIMER). Specifically, a team of researchers with various academic backgrounds are brought together to research a topic of common interest. These teams make use of shared research/teaching facilities at both Yale and SCSU. These collaborative research groups encourage synergy and foster the formation of mentoring relationships among team members who are recruited broadly with an emphasis on underrepresented populations. The CRISP REU program is open to highly motivated undergraduate students who have completed their junior year, although consideration is given to underclassmen demonstrating strong potential. REU University Programs for 2012:
The University of Alabama at Birmingham has REUs in Experimental and Computational Materials Research. The projects include high pressure materials research, thin film growth and characterization, microelectronic materials, nano-materials, laser materials, bioceramics and biopolymers, planetary materials, modeling of gas phase chemistry and surfaces in materials growth, and computer simulation of materials. The REU program will pay a $4,000 stipend for the ten weeks period, plus additional support for housing, travel and other expenses. REU programs are for US citizens. Undergraduates interested in participating in a 10-week summer physics research program at Brigham Young University are invited to apply. There are exciting opportunities in a number of areas including optics (using lasers of all kinds including ultrashort pulse and UV lasers), computer modeling, plasmas, solid state and thin film science, acoustics, theory, and astronomy. Caltech's MURF program aims to increase the participation of underrepresented students (such as African American, Hispanic, Native American, females who are underrepresented in their discipline, and first-generation college students) in science and engineering graduate programs. EACH SUMMER, the Maryland Sea Grant Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program offers fourteen students the opportunity to conduct marine research on the Chesapeake Bay — the program is especially designed for students majoring in such fields as biology, chemistry, ecology, environmental science, engineering, physics, marine science and mathematics. The University of Michigan Physics Department has an REU program based at CERN in Geneva , Switzerland. The program places physics and engineering undergraduates into active CERN research groups. The Department of Physics and Astronomy of Michigan State Universtity is seeking interested students to participate in the REU Program during the summer. Experimental and theoretical projects are available in nuclear physics, accelerator physics, particle physics, theoretical physics, astrophysics, biophysics, condensed matter physics, nanoscience, low temperature physics, computational physics, psychoacoustics, and physics education. Montana State University Department of Physics will offer Solar Physics/Astronomy & Space Physics REU positions during the summer. Most projects in this program involve analysis of data from solar space missions which are suitable for most students at the sophomore or junior level. Participants must be full-time undergraduates, typically finishing their sophomore or junior years. Applications from underrepresented groups are particularly welcomed. The Materials Research Science and Engineering Center at Northwestern University provides opportunities for undergraduates to engage in hands-on materials-related research for nine weeks during the summer. REU students will have the opportunity to contribute to a research project led by a center faculty member and will participate in interdisciplinary research group meetings, expanding their science and engineering experience into a range of fields. The International Institute for Nanotechnology at Northwestern University is offering a Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates in nanotechnology.Under the leadership of Professor Mark Hersam, REU is held for a nine-week period each summer. Participants engage in full-time research on a nanotechnology-related topic. They attend regular group meetings, which give them opportunities to share their progress and gain a broad overview on a wide array of scientific projects. Additional activities include tours of Northwestern facilities and laboratories, special lectures, field trips, technical writing workshops, a public speaking seminar, and a summer picnic. Physics Summer Research positions for undergraduate Physics Majors at the University of Notre Dame provides opportunities for Physics students to experience research first-hand, under direct supervision of faculty mentors. The University of Oklahoma Physics REU. This NSF-REU program is aimed at students who are interested in Physics and/or Astronomy and who may have potential for future graduate study. While some background is of course needed, we are interested in hearing from any motivated and talented student in the sciences. You must be a US citizen or permanent resident of the US or its possessions, must be currently enrolled in a program leading to a Bachelor's degree, and must not have graduated by the summer of 2012. The Department of Physics along with the Penn State University Material Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) has been designated a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site by the National Science Foundation Division of Materials Research. Positions are available for research projects in Laboratories located in various Penn State departments and are open to undergraduate students who are majoring in physics, chemistry, material science, all branches of engineering, etc. and have an interest in materials research. The Santa Fe Institute is offering summer research experiences for undergraduates. Undergraduate students work with faculty mentors on an individual research project focused on some aspect of complex systems. SFI's broad program of research is aimed at understanding both the common features of complex systems and at comprehending the enormous diversity of specific examples. The SETI Institute is pleased to announce that applications are now open for the 2012 REU program in Astrobiology. Undergraduate students in fields such as astronomy, biology, geology, chemistry, and physics are invited to apply to spend 10 weeks in the San Francisco Bay area working on a scientific research project in the field of astrobiology. Students will work on various research topics. REU Sensing and Signaling Research Experience for Undergrads at the University of Tennessee. The aim of this Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) is to provide hands-on research opportunities for undergraduate students majoring in the sciences, with an introduction to cutting-edge research in the broad area of “Sensing and Signaling”. This opportunity is available to Sophomore and Junior undergraduate science majors, with preference for Juniors. REU Fellowships will be awarded to qualified students on a competitive basis. The Maritime Studies Program of Williams College & Mystic Seaport in Connecticut is offering an interdisciplinary undergraduate semester focused on the world's oceans with courses in history, marine sciences, environmental policy, and literature of the sea. We encourage applications from undergraduate students of all majors from accredited four-year institutions. Each semester students from 12 to 14 different colleges representing up to 15 majors attend Williams-Mystic. Sophomores, juniors and seniors may attend.
