"Big is Beautiful-How Heavy Quarks Help Us Understand the Subnuclear World"

Todd Coleman
Lecturer
University of Wisconsin -River Falls

The Standard Model of Elementary Particle Physics is the most successful scientific theory you've probably never heard of.  First, we'll explore the basics of the Standard Model--the forces and particles that make up the matter in our universe.  We'll look at one particularly difficult issue--understanding the strong force that holds the proton together--and see how the existence of very massive quarks can simplify a very murky problem.
