March of the Pixels: A Satellite Tour of Antarctica

Dr. Ted Scambos

National Snow and Ice Data Center
University of Colorado, Boulder, CO

A new satellite-image-based map of the seventh continent provides an intriguing new insight into the structure and history of the world's largest ice sheet. The image has unprecedented feature resolution because of very careful processing to increase the available contrast of the ice sheet surface. Combining over 260 images in a 'super- resolution' scheme leads to outstanding views of glaciers, ice shelf features, huge dune fields, and ice-bound volcanoes.

Dr. Ted Scambos is a glaciologist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center, a part of the University of Colorado.  He is one of the world's leading experts on satellite imagery and remote sensing of ice and snow and also has extensive experience in the field.   He will supplement the talk with photos from his expeditions to the Antarctic and other satellite and airborne views.
Please come and see this visual feast of photos, images and science of the Antarctic continent.
