Science in the Healthcare Industry: Technology, Career Opportunities and Perspectives from a St. Olaf Physics & Math Graduate
Nadine Nereson, PhD ’91
Senior Manager, Ultrasound R&D
Philips HealthCare
I was in your position 22 years ago. In the Physics classes, in the Math classes, going to Chapel. As you contemplate the next step in your education, or are preparing for your first career decision, I’d like to share with you some experiences and thoughts as a former Ole, scientist, and hiring manager.
Topics will include:
- Science in the healthcare industry – an overview of the major medical imaging technologies with a focus on diagnostic ultrasound. Medical imaging is a fertile area of cutting-edge research and in need of people with a strong science and mathematics backgrounds.
- Who is hiring? And what do these companies do? An overview of Philips as a representative of the major industries in Medical Imaging.
- Perspectives as a hiring manager. After participating in over 50 interviews of new engineering employees, and having hired 6 Masters and PhD level engineers, I’ll share with you what managers look for as well as common mistakes. Also some tips for how to get “in the door.”
