Introduction to Atomic Spectroscopy

What colors of light are emitted from a gaseous discharge?  Why are some brighter than others?  How can this information be useful?  This talk will introduce the basic concepts of atomic spectroscopy and their application to research currently in progress on the spectrum of the rare earth element cerium.
