Archaeology Geophysics - Exploring for Ancient Subsurface Structures Surrounding the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway
(Part of the Statoil Summer Project 2007)

Christin W. Strandli '09
Physics Student, St. Olaf College

Together with three grad students from NTNU (the Norwegian University of Science and Technology) I used a ground penetrating radar to look for subsurface structures in the area where St. Olaf was buried. This particular radar generates 3D images, and we used Statoil's software to visualize and interpret the data. The method is non-intrusive, and it is the first time this type of archaeological survey has been carried out in Norway.
