Europium-rich EuO as a laboratory for exploring colossal magnetoresistance

Melissa Eblen-Zayas
Assistant Professor of Physics
Carleton College

Europium-rich EuO has received renewed interest from the physics community in the past decade both for its potential role in novel spin-based electronics (spintronics) and for the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) response that it shows. This binary compound exhibits a rich array of transport and magnetization behaviors that depend sensitively on the growth conditions of the EuO. I will discuss the pitfalls and potential payoffs of our experimental efforts to use the Eu-rich EuO system as a simplified laboratory for exploring the transport and magnetization response of CMR materials.
