James McGavran III

James McGavran joins the St. Olaf faculty as Visiting Assistant Professor of Russian for the 2012-2013 academic year. He completed a Ph.D. in Slavic Languages and Literatures at Princeton University in 2008 and teaches Russian Language and Literature courses. His research interests include 20th-century Russian poetry and poetics (Mayakovsky, Mandelstam, Tsvetaeva, Pasternak), poetic translation (theory and practice), Soviet-era prose, theories of the comic, and the intersection of chess and literature.
