2004 Work Trip to Staraya Russa

The Children's Home of Hope in Staraya Russa.

The Russian Orphanage Worktrip this coming August at Detsky Dom “Nadezhda” (Children’s Home of Hope) in Staraya Russa, Russia. The Detsky Dom “Nadezhda” houses 27 children ages 3-16. Once a boarding school, the orphanage is city-sponsored and still runs a school for seventy-five children besides those who live there. Eight children live in each of the seven apartments at the orphanage and three adult caretakers are assigned to each apartment. The monthly salary of the staff is approximately $90. When rubles are hard to come by, the staff barters with the orphanage for food and goods. The trip will run from approximately August 9th to August 31st. The group will be building a wooden lodge, helping set up email and Internet access for the children, teaching English, sports and games. A cultural program is also planned. The cost of the trip is $1800 per participant. If spots are filled quickly a waiting list will be started. Donations are tax-deductible. In addition to monetary donations, clothing, school supplies, children’s books and toys are also welcome donations.
