International Sociology Honor Society |
Alpha Kappa Delta, the international sociology honor society, was founded in 1920 at the University of Southern California. The Eta Chapter in Minnesota was charted in Fall 1989 at St. Olaf College.
The society's name is taken from the first letters of three Greek words-- anthropon (humankind), katamonthanein (to investigate or research), and diakonesein (for the purpose of service): "To investigate humanity for the purpose of service." The purpose of this Society is to promote an interest in the study of sociology, research of social problems, and other intellectual activities as will lead to improvement in the human condition.
Membership in Alpha Kappa Delta, the Eta Chapter of Minnesota, is open to St. Olaf students who:
- are officially declared sociology majors or minors (having completed at least four courses in sociology prior to initiation);
- are juniors or seniors;
- have a GPA of 3.0 overall;
- have a GPA of 3.0 in sociology courses taken at St. Olaf prior to initiation; and
- pay the lifetime membership fee
