Carolyn Anderson, Associate Professor of Anthropology, has taught at St. Olaf since 1997-1998. She grew up on a farm in northwestern Illinois and received her B. A. in anthropology with honors from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. She completed her Ph. D. in anthropology at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, where she continues to be affiliated with the American Indian Studies Research Institute. Her dissertation research focused on the Prairie Island Dakota community near Red Wing, Minnesota and the issues of Native American identity politics.
Professor Anderson has also done field research in Sweden and worked extensively in historic preservation and museums prior to college teaching. Her current research continues to focus on the Dakota people in Minnesota and Nebraska.
Professor Anderson lives in St. Paul, Minnesota with her husband and four cats. She likes art, jazz music, Native American literature, Irish literature, all things Swedish, and movies.
