Thomas Williamson

Tom Williamson teaches courses on globalization, Southeast Asia, nationalism, and ethnicity.  He is especially interested in the anthropology of modernity, understanding the diverse and complex ways the world's people experience industrialization, motorized transportation, rationalized bureaucracies, and mass communication.

Tom has lived in Japan, Thailand, and Indonesia, but his primary research interest is Malaysia.  Good friends and the country's fantastic cuisine keep him returning.

Raised in River Falls, Wisconsin, Tom graduated from St. Olaf (with fond memories of the Paracollege and the Term in the Far East).  He studied anthropology at the University of Michigan.  He enjoys trying to cook, running along the Mississippi, and typing at Dunn Brothers.

Tom teaches the following courses:
116 Modern Elixirs:  The Anthropology of Mood-Altering Substances
128 Introduction to Cultural Anthropology
239 Contemporary Issues in Southeast Asia
241 Global Interdependence
