Pandemic Planning and Response

Are You in an At-Risk Group?

The same groups of people who are at increased risk of becoming more severely ill from the seasonal flu are also at greater risk from H1N1. These groups include:

  • Children aged less than 5 years, particularly those less than 2 years of age.
  • Adults and children who have chronic health conditions including chronic lung problems such as asthma, metabolic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, and certain blood diseases.
  • Asthma patients or parents of patients with asthma should follow the guidance at this CDC website.
  • Adults and children who have a lowered immune system from medications or chronic health conditions.
  • Pregnant women.
  • Persons younger than 19 who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy.
  • Residents of nursing homes and other chronic-care facilities.

Talk with your physician about any special precautions that you should be taking to avoid the flu, and what you need to do should you get the flu.
