Pandemic Planning and Response
What You Can Do to Stay Healthy
During a Pandemic
Get Vaccinated once the H1N1 Vaccine is Available. Click Here to Learn More
And Follow the Recommendations Below:
1. Wash Your Hands Frequently!! Keeping hands clean is an important step you can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Wash your hands with soap and clean running water for 20 seconds (about as long as it takes to hum "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star").
If soap and clean water are not available then use an alcohol-based product to clean your hands. You are strongly encouraged to go purchase your own personal-size bottle(s) of hand sanitizer (very inexpensive) and carry it in your pocket/bookbag/purse. The Bookstore will carry a continuous supply.
2. Avoid Close Contact with people who are sick (the CDC recommends a distance of 6'). The most common way of becoming infected is inhaling virus particles from a contagious, coughing person. Click here for detailed explanations concerning the value of social distancing, and the measures that might be implemented during a severe pandemic.
3. Cover your Cough. Besides being polite, this is the most effective method to lessen the chance of infecting another person. Watch this short, amusing, and informative video on the proper way to cough/sneeze … (http://www.coughsafe.com/media.html)
4. Avoid Touching your Eyes, Nose, Mouth since germs spread easily this way.
5. Careful cleaning of frequently used surfaces: Visit this link to learn how to properly clean surfaces (doorknobs, desktops, keyboards, countertops etc.).
6. Maintain Good Health Practices: drink plenty of water, eat well, get enough sleep, and get adequate physical activity.
