The Centennial Anniversary in Norway

Norway is calling its Centennial Anniversary “En egen stemme” (a voice of our own). With events planned throughout Norway, Sweden and Denmark, as well as in China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Russia, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States, it promises to be one of the most widely commemorated centennials in history.

From its official opening on Feb. 5 until the closing ceremonies on Nov. 27, the program will mark the country’s first century of independence with a full array of civic and cultural events.

For most Norwegians, their national day — Syttende Mai (May 17) — is an annual highlight. The day is filled with speeches, parades, marching bands, national costumes and waving flags. May 17, 2005, will be all this and more as towns and cities across the country plan special events. The largest celebrations will take place in Oslo, Norway's capital, and in Eidsvoll, the birthplace of the constitution.

Centennial Anniversary festivals are planned in all of Norway’s largest cities throughout the summer months:
Oslo, June 3-13;
Bergen, June 13-19;
Stavanger, June 21-26;
Kristiansand, June 13-26;
Trondheim, Aug. 1-6;
and Tromsø, Aug. 16-21.

The King and Queen of Sweden visited Norway on June 10 and 11. The Swedish monarchs were on hand for two events: the opening of the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo and the opening of the New Svinesund Bridge, linking Norway and Sweden.

Throughout the year, Norwegians will take part in hundreds of art exhibits, sporting events, concerts, films, theatrical productions, television programs, conferences and other cultural projects.
