Health and Inequality: Social Determinants of Health

Health begins where we live, work and play. Healthy People 2020 emphasizes the need to provide
equal opportunities for good health for all Americans. A recent focus of Healthy People 2020 is the relationship between the social determinants of health including: environmental conditions
(economic, physical and social), resources and supports and individual health outcomes. These conditions (e.g. clean air, water, adequate housing), resources (e.g. access to health care, healthy
food and green space)and support (e.g. social support and social capital) in an individual’s environment may partially explain why some Americans are healthier than others. Identifying differences in the social determinants of health in the U.S. may stimulate the creation of strategies to improve the health of affected Americans. The global perspective of the relationship between social determinants and
health outcomes will also be addressed.

The objectives of the Social Science Conference on Public Health; Health and Inequality are as follows:

1. Increase awareness about society's role in individual and population health.
2. Explain the social determinants of health. (Healthy People 2020 framework)
3. Discuss the current state, national and global program implementation.
4. Examine strategies for students, faculty and community members to impact the social determinants of health.
