Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply?

Fill out this application and turn it into your local DMV. If you would like to apply online visit the Minnesota Department of Public Safety web site.

Where will my gift go?

The Department of Vehicle Services makes quarterly electronic transfers to St. Olaf. The compounded gifts are awarded as a scholarship to a student from Minnesota.

Do I need to wait until it's time to renew my current license plates to apply for St. Olaf license plate?

No, you can apply for St. Olaf license plates at any time.

Will I receive acknowledgment
from St. Olaf for my gift?

No. Gifts made are receipted and acknowledged only by the Department of Vehicle Services. The DVS is unable to share donor information with St. Olaf due to USC Title 18, 2721-2725 and M.S. 168.346.

Do gifts through the Collegiate License Plate Program count toward alumni participation or pledges
already made to St. Olaf?

No. The Department of Vehicle Services is unable, by law, to share donor information with St. Olaf. Therefore these gifts do not count toward alumni participation, or fulfill pledges already made to the college.

Can I get St. Olaf College license plates if my car is registered outside of Minnesota?
Each state has different rules about personalized license plates. There are several states that may potentially allow this in the future. Contact your local DMV if you're interested in bringing St. Olaf College license plates to your state.
How many St. Olaf license plates
are currently on the road?

As of July 2007 there were 62 registered St. Olaf License plates in the state of Minnesota.

I've seen a version with the St. Olaf seal,
are they still available?

The version with the lion was discontinued in 2006 and was replaced with the current design.

Is my gift through the Collegiate License Plate Program tax deductible?

No. Because the purchaser is receiving an item in return for the gift, it is not tax deductible. If you wish to make a tax deductible gift to St. Olaf, find out how here.

Are St. Olaf disability plates available?
Yes. In section A of the application check "Special Disability Plates" in addition to "Collegiate." We're not sure what they look like yet, but we're working to find out.
