1. Cultivate virtues appropriate to a culture of permanence.

Create a Week One orientation to environmental practices at St. Olaf, and follow-up programs in residence halls.

Determine students' environmental values and encourage reflection upon them.

Sign the Talloires Declaration and learn from the other Talloires schools.

Study schools that have tried to meet the Kyoto protocol.

Maintain membership in National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology project.

Continue composting grass and yard waste for later use in soil enrichment.

Create a permaculture garden as an example of sustainable growing practices.

Minimize herbicide and pesticide use on college grounds.

Maintain contact and cooperation with Carleton College, and other organizations in Northfield that share a sustainable agenda.

Appoint an environmental coordinator, and an ongoing environmental policy committee.

Make plans with stepped-up goals-reductions by 1% a year, etc.

Evaluate the long-term benefits (environmental and economic) of environmentally friendly products with high initial cost, and invest in such products where possible (i.e., hybrid vehicles that use less gasoline, fluorescent lights that use less energy, etc.).
