Art 255: Italian Art in Context:

The City of Florence

Description

This course is an intensive introduction to the history of the art and architecture of Florence . Through a study of Florence 's topography, its built environment and painted and sculpted imagery, students will study first-hand the history of Florence from its inception as a Roman colony through the nineteenth century when Florence was the capital of the newly unified Italian nation. As part of our study of Florence , we will examine the themes of religious and artistic pilgrimage. Our study of Florence will be enriched by travel to other cities such as Siena and Rome .

GE Credit: Artistic Studies (ALS-A)

Major Credit: Art (History, Studio, Education)

Prerequisite: Art 150, 151, 251, 254, 258, 261, 263 or 277. Students who have not taken Art History at St. Olaf but who have considerable preparation in a related field will be considered and accepted at the discretion of the instructor.

Course Requirements

Journals 25% : Students will be required to keep a daily journal of their experiences in and out of the classroom in Florence . We will discuss their journal entries as a group and they will be collected and graded at the end of the term. The journal assignment will be supplemented by our course readings, including Ross King's Brunelleschi's Dome and Spiro Kostof's essay on the form of cities.

Essays 15% each : Students will write two, 4-5 page essays on a given topic related to the week's discussions. These will be collected and graded in Florence .

Presentation 25% : Students will be assigned reading on a particular work of art or public space before departure. Following their individual on-site study of this work in Florence , each student will present this material to the class in front of the work.

Readings : Students will also be assigned scholarly articles and primary documents to read while in Florence . These will be collected in a course packet students will purchase before departure.

Attendance/Participation 20% : All students are expected to be active and engaged participants in all planned events for the course. Students must come to class every day with the reading assignments completed. Absences are not permitted except under extreme circumstances. Students must also remember that while they are abroad, they represent their country. Therefore, all students are expected to conduct themselves in a way that demonstrates respect for their fellow students and for the Italian people and culture.
