Multicultural Education in Hawaii
January 2009

Course participants examine the influence of race, class, and culture in American schools by participating as teacher assistants and tutors in two distinctly different K-12 schools--Kamehameha in Honolulu is an affluent private Hawaiian-immersion school; the Kealakehe Pubic Schools in Kailua Kona on the Big Island are rural, mixed-race, very diverse environments. Teacher candidates spend much of their time in school classrooms where they discover the challenges and benefits associated with teaching in diverse racial/ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic environments. Through working in the schools, readings and reflective writings, guest lectures, field trips and seminars, the course participants learn about the unique geographic and cultural setting of Hawaii. These experiences provide a lens from which to examine the influence of race/ethnicity, culture, and class on the mainland.
