Music in China

Instructors:
Dr. David Carter, St. Olaf College
Dr. Esther Wang, Gustavus Adolphus College

Hosted by East China Normal University in Shanghai , Music in China studies Chinese music from traditional, sacred and popular styles. Students will study this music through class lectures, guest lectures by Chinese faculty, and observation in concert, religious and informal settings. Field visits to important cultural sites around Shanghai , and in Beijing during the last week of the class, form an important additional aspect of the course. The daily schedule is structured to give students ample time to explore the culture of Shanghai. Contact with Chinese students, facilitated through former visiting scholars to St. Olaf, will provide students with additional opportunities to experience this culture.

Evaluation for Music in China will be through examinations, concert reports and class projects. Accommodations will be in either a guest house or the International Student Dormitory at ECNU. Visits and concerts are planned to the Shanghai Museum , the Yuyuan Gardens , the Jade Buddha Temple , the Longhua Temple and Pagoda, the Shanghai Conservatory, the Shanghai Opera, and the Shanghai Philharmonic. In addition, visits are planned to the city of Xuzhou , and in Beijing the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, the Ming Tombs and the Temple of Heaven .
