"Boughs of Good Luck " Zhouzhuang Water Village, between Shanghai and Suzhou, China Hundreds of pendants had been hung on the boughs of this tree, with the grees disc-like objects being jade Bi's. A Bi is a jade disk, first created in China around 2000 B.C., with a hole cut out in the center symbolizing the gods of the heavens. Jade has been used by the Chinese for over 4,000 years and represents nobility, perfection, constancy, immorality, and is believed to protect from misfortune and bring good luck. Because it was found in mountains and riverbeds, it first represtened heavn and Earth. |
