IOS - International Visiting Scholars –2009-2010
During the fall semester St. Olaf will host two visiting scholars from East China Normal University (ECNU) in Shanghai, China. Two Fulbright scholars from Russia and China are on campus for the entire academic year. Spring semester brings two new scholars from China’s ECNU, one scholar from Chiang Mai University, Thailand and one Christian Board of Higher Education in SE Asia scholar from India. Listed below is a brief introduction of the fall and Fulbright scholars. Please fee free to contact them and to help them get to know St. Olaf College and the Northfield community.
Fall Scholars:
Dr. Wu Bo is lecturer and teacher in translation in the English Department of ECNU. She received her Ph.D. at ECNU in 2005. While at St. Olaf she will further her research in translation history focusing on English translations of Chinese works. She is also interested in studying about Chinese native and English native translation teams. She will be mentored by Professor Shannon Cannella in the Asian Studies Dept. Ms. Lu Xiaohong is an Associate Professor in the School of Foreign Language at ECNU. She is currently a doctoral candidate in Education. Her research interests are in teaching English as a foreign Language and how culture teaching is integrated into language teaching. Professor Kari Lie of the Norwegian Dept. will serve as her mentor. Fulbrights:
Ms. Yulia Irgiztseva is from Chelyabinsk, a large industrial city in South Ural, Russia. She graduated from Chelyabinsk State Pedagogical University with majors in Physics and English. Since that time she has taught English as the Chair of Foreign Languages. She is also a doctoral candidate, researching Gadamer's hermeneutics. She is working as a teaching assistant with Professor Marc Robinson and is living in the St. Olaf Russian House. She will be on campus from September 2009 – May 2010. Ms. Yang Yang hails from Xi’an, China and attended Xi'an International Studies University (XISU) receiving her B.A. in English Literature and Language in 2003. She received an M.A. in English Linguistics in 2006. She has worked at Xi’an Jiaotong University teaching mainly non-English majors Oral English and Sources of European Culture since 2006. At St. Olaf she is currently working as a teaching assistant with Professor Chen Luying. Ms. Yang will be at St. Olaf from September 2009-May 2010.
