International Visiting Scholars - 2007-2008
Once again St. Olaf College will host several international visiting scholars during the academic year. Fall semester we have two visiting scholars from East China Normal University (ECNU) in Shanghai, China, one scholar from Chiang Mai University (CMU) in Thailand, and one scholar from Tumaini University in Tanzania. Second semester we will have two new scholars from ECNU, two scholars from Dar es Salaam University in Tanzania, and one scholar from Madras Christian College in India. Listed below is a brief introduction of the incoming fall scholars. Please feel free to contact them and to help them get to know St. Olaf College and the Northfield community.
Mr. Yi Zhang is an Associate Professor and the Dean of the English Department at ECNU, Shanghai. He has been teaching at ECNU since 1990. He received an M.A. from ECNU and a M.Ed. from the University of Kent in Canterbury, UK. Mr. Zhang's research is in applied Linguistics and Sociolinguistics. His research at St. Olaf College will focus on cultural influences on linguistic behavior, comparing similarities and differences between China and the US. Dr. Lianming Xu is an Associate Professor in Sociology at ECNU. He received his doctorate from Nanjing University, China . While at St. Olaf he intends to research the influence of the fashion design media on white collared workers in both China and the United States . Bruce Nordstrom-Loeb of the Sociology Department serves as mentor for Dr. Xu. Dr. Xu will be living at the Sovik House for International Scholars from September-December 2007, phone 646-8509. Dr. Wilailak Saraithong (Pom) is a Thai scholar from Chiang Mai University (CMU). She is an instructor of the English language and literature. Aj. Pom received her Ph.D. from Washington State University and her M.A from Michigan State University. In 1980-81 she was a foreign exchange student at St. Olaf College. She is planning to develop materials for two masters-level courses in Cultural Studies while she is here. Aj. Pom is being mentored by Mary Titus of the English Department. Aj. Ms. Marycelina Msuya is the Dean of Nursing at Tumaini University, Tanzania and has primarily taught Nursing Education and Teaching Leadership and Management Research. She received her Master of Public Health degree from Karolinska Institute, Sweden . She hopes to lecture, conduct research and build avenues for future cooperation with her university and St. Olaf College. Ms. Msuya is being mentored by Professor Mary Carlsen and Professor Diana Neal. Ms. Msuya will be living at the Sovik House for International Scholars from October-November 2007, phone 646-8509. Mr. D. Prince Annadurai, from Madras Christian College, Chennai, India, will be a visiting scholar during the spring semester sponsored by the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia. The UB Fellows Program aims to prepare the best mid-career faculty and administrators in Asia for future leadership in their home institutions. Mr. Annadurai has Masters' degrees in Social Work and in Psychology (clinical and counseling). Mr. Deogratias Fuli, a computer systems analyst in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, is interested in learning more about St. Olaf's IIT services and will work towards finishing his Master's degree in Computer Science. Professor Olaf Hall-Holt in Computer Sciences will be his mentor.
Mr. Baraka Kanyabuyinya, an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania in the Faculty of Law, will be at St. Olaf for the spring semester mentoring with Doug Casson of the Political Science Dept. Mr. Kanyabuyinya holds a Masters of Law degree in Intellecutal Property from the Franklin Pierce Law Centre in New Hampshire. He will be collecting data and preparing a literature review during second semester. Ms. Yaru Tan hails from Shanghai 's East China Normal University (ECNU) Music Department. She is interested in conducting and performance piano. She received her M.A. in music from ECNU. Ms. Tan will be mentored by Christopher Aspaas in the Music Dept. during her second semester stay. Mr. Baolin Wei teaches English as a second language at East China Normal University and will be at St. Olaf as a visiting scholar during the spring semester. He will be furthering his research in teaching English as a second language. Norwegian's Margaret O'Leary will be his mentor.
