NATIONAL SECURITY EDUCATION PROGRAM (NSEP)

Number of Awards: Semester; Year
Study Locations: Africa, Asia, Eastern/Central Europe, Central/ South America, Middle East. Excludes: Western Europe & Australia
Purpose: Department of Defense initiative which awards scholarships to U.S. undergraduates for study in world regions critical to U.S. national security interests.
Fields of Study: Computer Science; Health and Biomedical Sciences; History; Business & Economics; Mathematics; Social Sciences; Political Science; Foreign Languages
Eligibility: Must be U.S. Citizen and studying in: Tanzania , China , Japan , Korea , Hungary , Russia , India , Mexico , Turkey , Egypt . Must be studying the language of the country during the entire program. Must complete study before graduation.
Languages emphasized: Japanese, Hungarian, Korean, Mandarin, Turkish, Arabic and Russian; All recipients must agree to a language proficiency test prior to and after the abroad experience
Award based on: Merit; Academic record; Commitment to International Education; Language interest; Relevance to NSEP program
Award amount: $10,000 for a semester; $20,000 for yearlong
Procedure: Complete application including transcript, recommendations, financial information, two-part essay and formal interview
Application deadline: January 22, 2008 (this is St. Olaf's deadline to be able to process the application) December 5, 2007, if off-campus during interim
Notification date: early May, 2008
Award commitment: Awardees agree to seek employment with an agency of the federal government agency involved with national security affairs for the same amount of time of their scholarship.
