LIBRARY OF CONGRESS CLASSIFICATION

     Juvenile belles lettres falls under the Library of Congress classification PZ, 5-90 - "works classed here are in English and in foreign languages".

BRIDGE AND OTHER LIBRARY CATALOGS

     Bridge is the online catalog for St. Olaf.  Use Sage to search books (including subject-specific bibliographies and biographies) and periodicals, but not chapters within books or articles within periodicals.  You can also use Muse, Carleton College's online catalog or the Library of Congress Online Catalog.

For general information about children's literature, start with a subject search.  For example:

For works by a specific children's author, search by author.  For example: To find a specific children's book, search by title.  For example: To conduct a broader search, start with a keyword search.  For example: To find videos, search by SUBJECT, AUTHOR or TITLE and LIMIT by Material Type=>Video.

Use the LIMIT option to also find:

     Material type
          => Serials, Scores, Compacts Discs, LP
     Where Item is Located
     Date of Publication
     Language

     Use the cumulative author index in Contemporary Authors, or search for title of your work in the supplements to CLC, NCLC, TCLC and/or PC.

     Dictionary of Literary Biography has numerous volumes covering writers for children, i.e.,

            DLB 61:  American Writers for Children Since 1960.  Poets, Illustrators, and nonfiction authors.
            DLB 160:  British Children's Writers, 1914-1960
            DLB Documentary Series  14:  Four Women Writers for Children, 1868-1918

    TCLC and NCLC have a Topics Index.  Children's literature is included under a number of the topics volumes, i.e.
            NCLC 52:  Children's Literature, Nineteenth-Century
            TCLC 86:  Folklore and Literature
            TCLC 78:  Television and Literature (includes Children's Literature/Children's Television).

     Information about children's literature, and even a few children's books, can be found in the Government Documents section. Sections include, but are not limited to, the Department of Agriculture, the Library of Congress (of course), the Department of Justice, and the Department of the Interior.
