St. Olaf Libraries' Guide to Resources

Current Events & Newspapers / Primary Sources From Foreign Countries / Selected Statistical Sources /
Additional Resources on the Web / Evaluation of Web Sites /

Globalization was recently defined (Bealey, F. Blackwell dictionary of political science, 1999.) as a "term indicating a movement to a world society...." Hillary French (Vanishing borders: Protecting the planet in the age of globalization, 2000) uses globalization "to refer to a broad process of societal transformation that encompasses...growth in trade, investment, travel, computer networking, and transboundary pollution." The current conference will also have its own definitions.

Given the varieties of definitions, it is obvious that there is going to be a great deal of information about globalization in the St. Olaf Libraries. For example, if one were to do a keyword search in Sage, the Libraries' catalog, one would find 77 recent citations. In the "Social Sciences Suite" of Annual Reviews a search under "globalization" finds 10 essays contributed since 1997. And if one were to do a keyword search in Expanded Academic ASAP, the index often utilized as a starting place for refereed journal citations, one would find 240 citations in publications since 2000. Again, searching Lexis-Nexis general news for the last six months, one would find 528 citations. Finally, one could turn to the Web and search Google.com and get approximately 546,000 hits. Given the rapidly growing sources of information on globalization, the following compilation of resources can not claim to be inclusive. It is hoped that they will offer some valuable places to begin. Please feel free to consult a reference librarian if you have any questions.

LIBRARY CATALOGS

St. Olaf Libraries' Collections:
The St Olaf Libraries have a wealth of information related to globalization. While the reference collection will provide background information, items in the general collection will tend to cover more focused topics and provide more information about this topic.

Subject Search on Bridge

-Available on the library homepage:
http://www.stolaf.edu/library/research/books.htm
Conduct a Subject search using headings you have selected. If, when viewing an item's record, you see a Subject Heading that looks more interesting, just click on it and the catalog automatically conducts a search.

2. Keyword Search on Bridge
If a subject search is not satisfactory, try a Keyword search using a couple of descriptive terms. Try different combinations of words to get at what you need.

Other Library Catalogs:

MNCat: University of Minnesota's catalog. May be accessed from "Find Books, Journal titles..." on the library home page

Government Documents:
Search Sage just as you would for books but note the location of the item. Government documents are located on the 3rd floor of Rolvaag.

JOURNAL ARTICLES

Why Journal Articles?: It's quite time consuming to research, write, and publish a book. Often, authors of journal articles can cover, in great detail, the most recent research in a very focused area. You get focus and currency.

Given the plethora of indexes, you will need to consider whether you want broad, general indexes or specialized indexes. Also, you may be tempted to limit your search solely to full-text articles. This can be a trap. St. Olaf and Carleton own many excellent journals which you may borrow.

Multidisciplinary Indexes

Expanded Academic ASAP.
