BRIDGE AND OTHER LIBRARY CATALOGS

BRIDGE is St. Olaf's online catalog. Use Bridge to search for books and periodicals, but not for chapters within books or articles within periodicals.

If you know the title of the poem you are looking for, use a Title Search.  For example:

If you are looking for works by a specific poet, try an Author Search: You can use a Subject Search to find poems, poets, information about poetry and more.  Some suggested Subject Headings include: You can also combine two or more terms for a Word Search: You can Limit your search by year, location or material type.

THE GALE SERIES:

Contemporary Authors (CA) (CANR) [RR PN45 .C6--]
     The CA Cumulative Index covers the series by Gale Publishing, including DLB, CLC, TCLC , HLC and PC.

Dictionary of Literary Biography (DLB) [Each titled separately] [RR PN451 .D4]
     Covers writers, movements, and periods, i.e, DLB 48: American Poets, 1880-1945; DLB 237: The Beats: A Documentary Volume.

Contemporary Literary Criticism (CLC) [RR PR771 .C59--]
and Twentieth-Century Literary Criticism (TCLC) [RR PN761 .N5--]
     Major sources of scholarly criticism.

Poetry Criticism (PC) [RR PN1010 .P62]
     Lengthy entries include introduction, biographical information, major works, critical reception, criticism, and further reading. Cumulative title, author and nationality index. Use the index in the last volume in the series for most current selections. Also separate Title index.

Hispanic Literature Criticism 2v. [RR PQ7081.A1 H573 1994] 2v. supplement [1999]

Oxford English Dictionary  20 v. plus 3 "additional series" v.  [RR PE1625.087 1989] and OED2 on CD-ROM [CD-ROM]
     Entries outline the history of a given word, from the date of its introduction to the present.  Entries illustrate how meaning, pronunciation, and use change over the years.  A good portion of each entry consists of examples of use over the centuries and includes references to the actual publications.

  OED Online
    The online version of the Oxford English Dictionary.

A Guide to the Oxford English Dictionary [RR PE1617 .049 B47 1993]
     A great source explaining the various nuances of the OED.

Literature of Nature: An International Sourcebook [RR PN48 .L58]
     Search by author in index. Essays include, Knocking on Nature's Door: Religious Meaning in Twentieth-Century U.S. Poetry.

Gay & Lesbian Literature 2v. [RR PN56 .H57 G36 1994]
     Includes scholars whose work has contributed significantly to the field [poetry] as well as authors known predominately for their work in social and political arenas.

Feminist Writers [RR PN451 .F46 1996]
     Includes a nationality index and a subject and genre index (categorized by the primary literary genres in which they wrote or subject areas relevant to the study of feminism covered in their works).

Encyclopedia of World Literature in the 20th Century 4v. [RR PN771 .E5 1999]
     "A comprehensive survey of significant literary activity of international scope and proportion."

The New Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics [RR PN1021 .N39 1993]
     Use contents list in front for an overview of the subjects.

Readers Guide to Literature in English [RR PR85 .R33 1996]
     Covers critical writing in the literature of the British Isles, the U.S., and other major English-speaking traditions of the world. See especially the Thematic List that begins on page xix.

     Treatment of poets includes principal works, achievements, biography, and analysis.

These are only some of the indexes that are available. Consult "Indexes.." on the Libraries webpage for the entire list.

The American Humanities Index [RR AI3 .A278]
     An index to scholarly and creative English language literary journals. Most are either not indexed elsewhere or are indexed only partially in other indexing services.

The Columbia Granger's World of Poetry [also in paper: RR AI3 .E75]
     The online version of the standard poetry index includes 13,000 poems in full text, 250,000 poetry citations, commentaries, biographies, bibliographies, notes on form, and a glossary of prosodic terms.

    The U.S. Government periodicals index, indexes numerous periodicals in the St. Olaf Libraries' Government Document collection.

Historical Abstracts and America: History and Life

Lexis-Nexis Academic Index
    Provides access to full-text articles in national and international newspapers.

MLA International Bibliography [2 disks on CD-ROM on CD-ROM Tower - covers 1963-present]
    Produced by the Modern Language Association, the MLA provides access to scholarly research in over 3000 journals and series. It consists of bibliographic records pertaining to literature, language, linguistics and folklore, and covers monographs, essays, working papers, proceedings and other formats.

  MLA Bibliography Online
    The online version of MLA. Not as fast as the CD-ROM version, but it is accessible anywhere on campus. Begin by choosing database from top right of screen. Log off when done - the campus is licensed for only four simultaneous users.

PERIODICAL LOCATION

    Titles and holdings can also be found by searching Sage and Muse. Periodicals are located on level 3-1/2 and 4 of Rolvaag, and in Music and Science as indicated from the catalog location. Pre-1960 periodicals located on level 1. 


INTERLIBRARY LOAN

    Any item not owned by St. Olaf may be ordered through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) provided you allow enough time. See the Reference Librarian for ILL forms. Also available on the webpage.

Once you are a registered patron with Carleton you may request the materials online through Muse.
