Finding Journal and Newspaper Articles |
The thing to remember when searching for a journal or newspaper article is that you are NOT going to be able to find it in the
Bridge online catalog . Instead, use periodical databases and indexes to search for journal and newspaper
articles. There are several databases and indexes which are especially useful for locating information relating to
music. This list may also be viewed by going to the Halvorson Music Library webpage, and then clicking on Electronic Research Tools and includes:
Academic Search Premiere, 1975-present
[Available online via Electronic Research Tools page]
-An online index to more than 8000 publications covering a variety of subject areas, many in full text.
A good way to gain access to recent materials as well as more general journals that may not be indexed
in Music Index.
International Index to Music Periodicals (IIMP), 1874-present
[Available online via Electronic Research Tools page]
- Indexes a wide variety of international music periodicals, some back to the late 1800s. Includes abstracts
from 1996 to the present.
Music Index, 1949-present
[Music Library Reference ML118.M9 (Index tables) and online]
- The major index to periodical literature in the field of music. Indexes obituaries, book reviews, reviews of
performances, and scholarly articles from over 300 music periodicals. Does not include abstracts.
Online database covers 1979 - present.
RILM Abstracts of Music Literature , 1967-present
[Available online via Electronic Research Tools page]
- Covers all aspects of music, including historical musicology, ethnomusicology, instruments and voice, dance,
and music therapy. Also includes all formats of scholarly works -- articles, books, bibliographies, catalogs,
dissertations, films and videos, conference proceedings, and more. Includes abstracts, which are helpful short descriptions of the material.
