Begin your research by gaining an overview of your topic, identifying key authorities in the field, and getting basic bibliographic information (for further reading) by consulting:

ENCYCLOPEDIAS AND DICTIONARIES

General

  • The New Encyclopaedia Britannica or Britannica.Com (online version) 2002. [RR AE5.E56 or Online via the Libraries' web page] A wonderful general encyclopedia.

Cultural

  • ( Worldmark ) Encyclopedia of Cultures and Daily Life . Detroit: Gale, 1998. 4 vols. [RR GN 333.W67 1998]
    Provides excellent background material on individual cultures including information on language, holidays, customs, living conditions, food, clothing, work, etc.
  • Encyclopedia of World Cultures. 1992. 10 vols. [RR GN 550.E53 1991]
    Provides information on cultures including orientation, history and cultural relations, economy, family life and customs, sociopolitical organization, religion and culture, and the arts (including dance). Includes useful bibliographies. This is a great resource for background and contextual information.

Dance

  • The International Encyclopedia of Dance. 1998. 6 vols. [RR GV1585.I586 1998] An excellent resource with scholarly articles on "major personalities, companies, and dance works of influential significance." International in scope. Each entry also has a bibliography of additional sources.

Sports

  • International Encyclopedia of Women and Sports.  R.R. GV 709 .I58 2001
  • Dictionary of the Sport and Exercise Sciences. R.R. GV 558 .D53 1991

Science

  • McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology. 9th ed. 2002. 10 vols. [Science Library Reference Q121.M3 2002] A basic encyclopedia of science and technology. A good starting point for topics dealing with biology and physiology.

Music

  • The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music . New York: Garland, 1998- 10 vols. [Music Library Reference ML 100 .G16 1998] An extraordinary resource for world music and dance. Each volume presents a different geographical area. Substantial scholarly articles, complete with bibliographies and illustrations, are provided. Be sure to use the index in volume 10; look up "dance and movement" in the index to find information on a specific country or ethnic group.
  • New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 2nd ed.   29 vols. Stanley Sadie, ed. London: Macmillan, 2001 [Music Library  Reference ML100.N48 2001 and online ] The most comprehensive and authoritative source on music in the English language. Signed articles are written by specialists in the field and include extensive bibliographies. For non-Western music, the most commonly used access points are geographical headings (e.g. name of continent or country) and names of ethnic groups.  Online version includes links to other Internet resrouces and sites.  Up-to-date bibliographies make this source a terrific starting point for further research.

Women's Studies/Gender Studies

  • Encyclopedia of Women and Gender. 2001. [RR HQ 1115.E52 2001] Examines impact of society on gender.
  • Women's Studies Encyclopedia.   3v. Helen Tierney, ed.. Greenwood Press, 1999. [R.R. HQ1115 .W645 1999]
    Scholarly. Covers women from multidisciplinary perspective. Wide variety of feminist views. Use index. Incl. articles on Buddhism, China, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, Religion, Childbirth etc. Brief bibliographies at the end of articles.
  • Women in the Third World: An encyclopedia of contemporary issues. [RR HQ 1870.9 .W6548 1998]
    Organized by topics and geographical areas. Note: the annotated bibliography on pp. 649-659.
  • Women & Health. [RR RA778. W742 2000] See section on reproductive health for statistics on caesarean births.

Education

  • Education and Sociology: An Encyclopedia. 2002. [RR LC189.95. E38 2002] Provocative, scholarly treatment of topics: bilingual ed., desegregation, educational assessment, gender, home schooling etc.
  • Encyclopedia of Education. 2003. 2nd ed. [RR LB15 .E47 2003] Articles on alternative schooling, affirmative action, assessment, ADHD, home schooling, learning disabilities, testing, year round education etc. Short bibls .

Sociology/Anthropology

  • International Encyclopedia of the Social and Behavioral Sciences. 24 vol. 2001. [RR H41. I5 2001] Scholarly, comprehensive work.

LIBRARY CATALOGS

  • The Bridge is the online catalog for St. Olaf and Carleton. Use Bridge to search for books and periodicals, but not chapters within books or articles within periodicals. To find appropriate subject headings, consult the Library of Congress Subject Headings [RR Z695.L694 near the reference computer terminals].
  • WorldCat : A catalog that provides records for materials owned by numerous libraries across the country.

INDEXES AND ABSTRACTS

  • America History and Life Historical database covering USA and Canada. Offers excellent broad coverage.
  • Art Index Index to scholarly materials on art. 1984 - present. Available in paper from 1928-present [R.R. N1.A1 A7].
  • ATLA Religion Database Index to articles, essays, and book reviews in religion journals on religion. Covers 1949 to the present.
  • Gender Watch Full-text collection of international journals, magazines, newsletters, regional publications, special reports and conference proceedings devoted to women's and gender issues. Includes archival material back to mid 1970s.
  • Historical abstracts Historical database covering all countries except Canada and USA.
  • International Index to Music Periodicals An index to over 400 music periodicals and selected newspapers.
  • International Index to the Performing Arts Indexes approximately 140 periodicals.
  • MLA International Bibliography . Access to scholarly research in literature, language, lingusitics and folklore.
  • Music Index . An index to over 300 music periodicals from 1979-present.
  • PAIS (Public Affairs Information Service) 1972 - An index to public policy and political affairs around the world.
  • PsycINFO The major index for psychology. Covers over 1300 journals, plus books, technical reports, dissertations, and more.
  • Sociological Abstracts An index to 2600 sociology journals plus book abstracts and review citations.
  • Women Studies Abstract (R.R. HQ 1101 .W65). 1972-1999. Each issue abstracts 400-500 articles from about 35 journals. Includes book reviews. Start with index at the end of the annual volume.
  • Women's studies index. 1991- (RR HQ1180 .W63) Selective author/subject index to articles in a wide range of scholarly and popular periodicals, mainly American in origin. 2 year lag.

Multidisciplinary Journal Indexes

  • JSTOR : source of full-text scholarly academic journals up to the last 3-5 years. Searches may be conducted by discipline.
  • Project Muse An index to and full text of journals published by Johns Hopkins University Press.
  • Academic Search Premiere. Provides access to over 8040 multi-disciplinary publications, many in full-text. Covers 1975 to present.

  • Hispanic American Periodicals Index (HAPI) UCLA Latin American Center, 1970/74- Includes citations only - not abstracts.
  • Handbook of Latin American Studies Edited by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress. An essential guide to Latin American resources.
  • Middle East and Africa
  • The Middle East Abstracts and Index [RR DS41 .M44]
    Comprehensive index of scholarly materials, gov . documents, newspaper articles etc. Organized by country. Accessible through the subject index. Lengthy abstracts.
  • Africabib.Org [ http://www.africabib.org/ ]
    Maintained by the Institute for Economic Advancement (IEA) in Little Rock, Arkansas, this site site consists of two bibliographic databases covering Africana periodical literature (Bibliography of Africana Periodical Literature Database) and African Women's literature (African Women's Database).
