Bridge is your access point for materials held by Carleton and St. Olaf. You will also probably want to use World Cat, which covers most academic libraries in the United States. Play around in Bridge with keywords and then note the linked Library of Congress Subject Headings. You will have better luck in World Cat with subject searches and then limit by date, language and format to those materials in which you'll be most interested.

Book Review Sources

Institute of Historical Research: Reviews in History Great resource from Great Britain. Note "author's response" to continue the conversation about the resource.
Book Review Index [R.R. Z1035.A1B6] Includes a good number of scholarly reviews with substantive reviews.
Book Review Digest [ R.R.  Z1219.B72, 1906-] for items older than databases cover well; primarily brief reviews.

Each of the databases below will also contain reviews.

For journal literature, consult:

Indexes, Abstracts and Databases

Primary index:
Historical Abstracts The major source for scholarly articles and reviews in this field.

Disciplinary online indexes:
ATLA [Religion]

Multidisciplinary Index:

Fulltext databases:
JSTOR
Beware the "moving wall" (i.e. the most recent 3-5 years of many journals are not included)
Project Muse
Does not have the "moving wall" issue. Both of these databases cover only a certain select number of titles.

Note: Many databases now include full text. With the SFX (or "Find it" button) software, you can search in a discipline-based tool like Historical Abstracts and be sure of a good search engine and excellent number of journals indexed, and still have access to all the full-text available.

As you find references to journal articles, pay particular attention to items published in the following journals:

English Historical Review
Past and Present
Journal of Economic History
Journal of Ecclesiastical History
Historical Journal
Journal of British Studies
Albion
History Today
Scottish Historical Review
Irish Historical Studies
