GENERAL:

The Dictionary of Art. 34 v. [R.R. N31 .D5 1996]
The most comprehensive art reference work around, even though it treats Western art more extensively. Vol. 34 is an index to the entire set.

The Encyclopedia of World Art. 17v. [R.R. N31 .E59]
This work was once considered the standard encyclopedia of art. Still valuable and containing excellent scholarship. Vol. 15 is an index.

The Encyclopedia of Visual Art. 10v. [R.R. N25 .E53 1983] Published by Britannica and containing sections on different regions of the world, different time periods. The last several volumes is a biographical dictionary of artists.

Bridge catalogs resources available at St. Olaf and Carleton libraries. Use Bridge to search for books and periodicals, but not chapters within books or articles within periodicals.

  • Use a Keyword search if you do not know the subject or you wish to combine more than one idea, e.g.["advertis* AND controvers*] Use asterisk (*) to search various endings (e.g. "controvers*" will retrieve "controversy, controversies, controversial" etc.)
  • Once you have found a key reference, explore the subject by clicking on the link in the catalog.
  • Use the limiting option to search for different types of material (e.g. videos, DVDs, government documents), or specific publication dates.

 

Browsing is another way to search for materials, once you know the Library of Congress call number ranges for the materials you want. Here are some examples

If you find a book at Carleton that you would like to check out, use the button at the top of the BRIDGE record for that item. You will then be asked to log in and submit the request. You will be notified via e-mail within a day that your book has arrived and you can pick it up at the Circulation Desk.

This database provides access to over 8040 multi-disciplinary publications, many in full text. Covers 1975 to the present.

Jstor
An index to and full text of select, academic journals.

Project Muse
An index to and full text of journals published by Johns Hopkins University Press and other scholarly publishers.

Art Index

"Indexes English-language art periodicals, plus museum bulletins, bibliographies, film reviews, and conference reports. Covers 1984 to the present.

Art Index Retrospective
Covers 1929-1984.

ARTbibliographies Modern
Modern and contemporary art, photography and design. Covers 1974-present.

History:

America: History & Life -- An index to approximately 2,800 journals, plus dissertations and books in North American History. Indexes literature published from 1964 to the present. See Historical Abstracts for coverage outsde North America.

Gender/Sexuality:

Women's Studies International -- Covers the core disciplines in Women's Studies to the latest scholarship in feminist research. Coverage spans from 1972 and earlier to present.

Gender Watch -- A full-text collection of international journals, magazines, newsletters, regional publications, special reports and conference proceedings devoted to women's and gender issues.

Sociological Abstracts -- An index to 2600 sociology journals plus book abstracts. Covers 1963-present.

Business:

Business Source Premier
Indexes approximately 3800 business journals with full-text for over 1100 publications. Covers 1922 to present.

Newspapers:

LexisNexis Academic
Excellent source for full-text articles in national and international newspapers.

New York Times (1851 - 2004)
Offers "full page and article images with searchable full text back to the first issue. The collection includes digital reproductions providing access to every page from every available issue."


Images of art:

ARTstor (St. Olaf subscribes to this resource)
A "repository of hundreds of thousands of digital images and related data." Covers architecture, painting, sculpture, photography, decorative arts, and design from many cultures. ARTstor also features an Offline Image Viewer (OIV) that you can use to create presentations. It can be easily downloaded form the ARTstor site.

ArtSource
A web site of collected images submitted by librarians, artists and art historians.

Web Gallery of Art
Searchable images of art from the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque.

The Beazley Archive
Large collection of images from Greek vases. Well indexed extensive collection.

Timeline of Art History
Well researched site sponsored by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

COMPASS (Collections Multimedia Public Access System)
Access to 5000 objects housed in the British Museum.

CORSAIR
Images from Medieval and Renaissance manuscripts.

The George Ortiz Collection
Private collection of ancient art. Entries exist for each item as well as a glossary.

Google Image Search
Search the Internet for art images.
