Oxford English Dictionary 20v. [RR PE1625.087 1989] Entries outline the history of a given word, from the date of its introduction to the present. Entries illustrate how meaning, pronunciation, and use have evolved over time. You may access the complete text of OED Online.

Middle English Dictionary 13v. [RR PE679.M4]
Covers terms "from the Norman Conquest to the beginning of printing." As in the OED, entries include examples of use and note sources and dates. Citations to sources are often abbreviated - check the list of abbreviations among the front material. Also available online from the Middle English Compendium.

  • Use a Keyword search if you do not know the subject or you wish to combine more than one idea, e.g.[Shakespeare* AND sonnet*] Use asterisk (*) to search various endings (e.g. "Shakespeare* will retrieve "Shakespeare," "Shakespearean," "Shakespeare's," etc.)

Online versions of Classical and Medieval Literature Criticism, Contemporary Literary Criticism, Literature Criticism from 1400 to 1800, Nineteenth-Century Literature Criticism, Poetry Criticism, Shakespearean Criticism, Short Story Criticism, and Twentieth-Century Literary Criticism. Biography and Genealogy Master Index
An index to biographical encyclopedias and dictionaries.

Dictionary of National Biography
The Oxford DNB contains 56,000 biographies of people who shaped the history of the British Isles and beyond, from the 4th century BC to the year 2004.

Dictionary of Literary Biography
Covers writers, movements, and periods in scholarly essays by authorities. Contains selective bibliographies.

Middle Ages -- "Portrays every day life in Medieval times and contains sections on feudal life, religion, homes, clothing, health, arts & entertainment, and town life. The Labyrinth : Resources for Medieval Studies -- "A well-organized and extensive virtual library which provides links to resources in Medieval Studies. Cultures covered include those of the British Isles, Anglo-Saxon, France, Germany, Iberia, Italy, and Scandinavia. Sections on archaeology, arts and architecture, general Medieval history, Latin, Manuscripts (Paleography, Codicology), music, philosophy and theology, religious history, and sciences are presented. Special topics include Arthurian Studies, heraldry, arms, and chivalry,Vikings, runes, and Norse culture."

Monastic Matrix: Women's Religious Communities From 400 to 1600 CE -- "A searchable database that collects infomation on women's religious communities in pre-modern Europe -- not strictly organizations that are the female counterpart or equivalent of male monasteries, but also organizations that may not have a specific power structure; i.e. hospices, house churches and spiritual groups. These organizations can also be browsed by region, name, dedication or time period. A Vocabulary of useful terms related to the time period and subject matter is presented, and the Vitae section compiles biographies of persons important to the history of women's religious communities in Europe. Also available on the site is a small collection of primary documents, a collection of secondary sources and nearly 300 images of art objects, architecture, archaeological remains, site-plans, and maps.

Chartres: Cathedral of Notre-Dame Image Collection -- "This website provides access to a comprehensive collection of images and detailed descriptions of Chartres Cathedral."
More than 3,000 images with full bibliographic records and choice of 6 viewing sizes. Searchable.


Chaucer:  An Annotated Guide to Online Resources
-- "This site lists, evaluates, and describes many Geoffrey Chaucer -related Web sites. Topics include biography, bibliography, background, commentary, images, Middle English, and teaching resources. Searchable."

Augustine of Hippo -- "Definitive site for Saint Augustine of Hippo. There are English and Latin translations of his works, including the all-important Confessions , research papers, and links to pop culture references to St. Augustine." Maintained by a Classical Studies professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

Digital Dante -- "Everything you want to know about Dante Alighieri, Medieval Italian poet and author of "The Divine Comedy," is here: biographical information, electronic texts, associated artwork, scholarly articles, even a list "Searchable.

Feminae: Medieval Women and Gender Index -- Indexes "journal articles, book reviews, and essays in books about women, sexuality, and gender during the Middle Ages."
There are over 17,000 bibliographic records in the database, covering gender, sexuality, and women's history, as well as masculinity and male homosexuality in the Middle Ages.

The British Library Online Gallery
-An attractive site with a simple search box to find available e-books. One special offering of
this gallery is the " Turning the pages" feature, which strives to provide the reader with an
authentic "real book" experience. Highlights include The Luttrell Psalter and Baybar's Magnificent Qur'an, "epitome of sumptuos Arabic calligraphy."

N.Y. Public Library Digital Gallery

Provides open access to over 640,000 images digitized from the The New York Public Library's vast collections, including illuminated manuscripts , historical maps , vintage posters, rare prints , photographs and more .
