Hometown and education: Fairfax , VA , but I spent my growing-up summers in upstate New York . I came to the Midwest in 1970 to attend Earlham College and have always maintained my roots here since then. I received my MLS from University of Michigan , Ann Arbor , and spent the summer of 2006 studying Japanese at International Christian University in Tokyo .
Responsibilities at St. Olaf: I am primarily a reference and instruction librarian, teaching research methods in the departments and programs listed above. I also am a member of the Asian Studies department and teach AS 275: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Asia . This course is designed to introduce newer Asian Studies majors and concentrators to the interdisciplinary nature of the field and to prepare them for the senior seminar, and people of any major are welcome to take it. I serve on the Faculty Governance Committee and am part of a learning community studying the needs of incoming under-prepared students.
Academic Interests: Information literacy, sustainability, food and farming (particularly in an Asian context), role of women in Japanese society.
Outside interests: I am a mother of grown daughters, a baker of desserts (especially of the chocolate variety), a canoeist and hiker, and a student of Japanese language. I like playing cribbage, dominoes and cards. And you shouldn't be surprised if we're talking outside to have me suddenly glance into the sky if I catch sight of a raptor passing over!
