The Latest Art in the Library Come see the collection of abstract paintings on the main level of Rolvaag Memorial Library created by Wendell Arneson, professor of Art/Art History at St. Olaf College. There seems to be two different themes running through Arneson’s paintings: the juxtaposition of the individual and crowds, and the exploration of space. Arneson uses bright, bold colors with thick paint to create texture and movement. The style seems almost primitivistic, with faces like African masks. All together, the beautiful colors and abstract shapes make the viewer feel the ideas the artist is trying to convey, as opposed to just seeing those ideas. Below is just one of the many paintings displayed on 3rd floor at Rolvaag Memorial Library around the corner from the Circulation Desk.
For those of us who “don’t get” abstract art, Arneson suggested a short exercise for understanding any piece of art.
This exercise is guaranteed to lend more meaning for the art viewer and is very fun to do with people of all ages! You can find more on Arneson’s work: http://www.stolaf.edu/depts/art/faculty/arneson.html Slow down your life a little. Stop and see the art in Rolvaag Memorial
