Last week, the only person to ever stand at both poles of the earth and the top of Mount Everest, Sir Edmund Hillary, died. Check out some of the books authored by Sir Edmund in our collection.

8/27/07: WATER IN ROLVAAG LIBRARY
On Friday, August 24th, the water in Rolvaag Library will be turned off so crews can work on the water main to the new science building. Please plan to use the restrooms and water fountains in Buntrock if you'll be visiting the library on Friday.
8/27/07: ROLVAAG LIBRARY FRIDAY HOURS
Please remember that Rolvaag Library will be closing at noon this Friday. Please check our hours page for other days.
8/23/07: REWIRING IN ROLVAAG LIBRARY
This summer many areas in Rolvaag Library will be rewired. The contractors are now working on the 4th floor, including the classroom 477. Please note that both phone and internet service will be interrupted during this work. Thanks for your patience!

You've probably used it in it's print form for a GE class, but now you can access this great source online! CQ Researcher compiles information on topics in the news to provide background, opposing viewpoints, and further sources. Recent reports include "Biofuels Boom," "Stem Cell Research", and "Treatment of Detainees."

The libraries have added many new books, movies, and music materials to their shelves during August. Also, this summer we moved our DVD collection to the media room on the 3rd floor of Rolvaag. You can now browse the titles without asking at the circulation desk!

If you are using Rolvaag Library this summer, you'll notice some construction going on. As the World Language Center moves into the first floor, we are renovating some storage area for extra shelf space and building a classroom. Please bear with us as we move materials and furniture around.

5/16/06: THE NEW YORK TIMES ONLINE
The Libraries now subscribe to the full-text of The New York Times online! The database goes back to the very first issue of the newspaper through 2003. For articles from 2003 on, LexisNexis provides full-text access. Both databases allow you to search the entire article.

St. Olaf will be hosting a Japanese librarian for February through April. Her name is Nahoko Ishii, and she is a reference-instruction librarian at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan. St. Olaf has a new, more complete list of our journals. Currently the list is most accurate for online titles, but more and more print titles are being added. The new list also includes titles Carleton owns. You can search as well as browse by title or subject area. So, the next time you're wondering if we own a particular journal, search the Periodicals Title List!

September 25th - October 1st is Banned Books Week. This year, the Libraries will celebrate with readings from banned books in the Rolvaag Library lobby. The readings will take place Monday through Friday from 11 to 1. Stop by to listen or read from your favorite banned, burned, or suppressed book!
10/3/05: EXTENDED HOURS BEGIN THIS WEEKEND!
Starting this Sunday (9/25), Rolvaag Library will be open until 2 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Please see the library hours page for a complete listing of the hours at Rolvaag, Music and Science.
9/25/05: BOOKS ON HURRICANES

Has Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath made you interested in learning more about hurricanes and their effect on land, people, and governments? Read more with these books from Rolvaag's collection.
9/23/05: LIBRARY SCREENING ROOM
Over the summer, IIT installed new equipment in RML 145A, including a large LCD TV with a multi-standard and multi-regional DVD and VHS player. A Macintosh and a PC are also available to practice presentations. The library has installed comfortable chairs and beanbags. The room is open for all to use. The key for the room and equipment is available at the circulation desk.
9/15/05: FIND IT! SERVICE
Over the summer, the St. Olaf and Carleton libraries implemented "Find It!". It allows you to see all your options for getting the full-text of an article at the click of a button. Look for this button:
in the databases listed on the Electronic Research Tools page. If you need any help using the "Find It!" menu, stop by the reference desk.
9/12/05: NEW RESOURCE FOR MIDDLE ENGLISH RESEARCH
St. Olaf now has a license for the Middle English Compendium. This database (available from the Electronic Research Tools section of the Libraries' website) provides online access to the Middle English Dictionary, a bibliography of Middle English prose and verse, and other electronic resources.
9/1/05: NEW SEARCH INTERFACE FOR BUSINESS SOURCE PREMIER
Business Source Premier now has a business searching interface. It allows you to do a quick search by company and industry, browse company profiles and country reports, or combine many features in the advanced search. Enjoy this new and easy way to do business research!
4/5/05:SPRING BREAK HOURS

3/9/05: CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH...
...With a new website that explores African-American migration. In Motion: The African-American Migration Experience is presented by the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and includes more than 16,500 pages of essays, books, articles, and manuscripts, 8,300 illustrations, and 60 maps.
3/9/05: PHILOSOPHER'S INDEX NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE
Philosopher's Index, previously available only in print and CD-ROM, can now be used on the web. Information on the contents of Philosopher's Index can be found here.
2/7/05: NEW JSTOR SEARCH INTERFACE
JSTOR, one of our full-text article databases, recently implemented a new search interface. When you enter JSTOR, click on "Search" and then choose the "Advanced Search" option. You now have several boxes that clearly state the type of search taking place; beneath the search boxes are many limits, including fields, dates, journal names, and subject areas. If you have any questions about using the new JSTOR interface, please contact the reference desk.

1/19/05: USE YOUR USERNAME & PASSWORD TO ACCESS LIBRARY SERVICES
St. Olaf and Carleton have implemented some new technology that allows you to login to your library account with your campus username and password (instead of name and barcode). You can also use your username and password to request books from Carleton and through interlibrary loan. Ask a reference librarian if you have any questions about using this feature.
1/13/05: NEW CSA INTERFACE
You may notice some changes when you search your favorite CSA database, like PsycINFO or Index Islamicus. CSA switched to their new interface: it's simpler, easy to use, and has several great new features. Click here to try it!
12/20/04: ROLVAAG OPEN LATE THIS WEEKEND!
Rolvaag will be open extra hours this weekend:
On Friday (12/17) and Saturday (12/18) the library will close at midnight (instead of 9 p.m.)

10/15/04: OXFORD DICTIONARY OF NATIONAL BIOGRAPHY
The 60-volume print edition of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography is now in Rolvaag Reference. It comes with a complimentary subscription to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography Online (through September, 2005).
This "ground-breaking and engaging reference work provides 50,000 specially-written signed biographies of the men and women who shaped all aspects of the British past, from the earliest times to the end of the year 2000."
