Search Engines

Search engines allow you to search for Web sites by entering in keywords. They all do this in different ways, so please read the online Help section for the search engine you are using. The following list includes a few search engines that may be useful for your research. For news, tips, and more information about search engines, visit Search Engine Watch.

For best results, always use the search engine's Advanced Search option! Also, please remember to evaluate critically all Internet resources before using them in your research!

Alta Vista
A search engine that indexes full text of Web pages (37+ million), including many archived mailing lists and Usenet group postings (14,000). Its Advanced Search is one of the best on the Net. See Alta Vista's Help Advanced Search page for details.

Ask Jeeves!
Ask Jeeves is a human-powered search service that aims to direct you to the exact page that answers your question. If it fails to find a match within its own database, then it will provide matching Web pages from various search engines. See Ask Jeeves! Help page for details.

Google
One of the fastest engines currently on the Web. It is especially helpful in locating useful sites as it ranks sites by the number of times other sites link to it. Google Help page.

HotBot
A search engine that indexes full text of Web pages (54+ million), including most archived mailing lists. Offers simple and advanced search interfaces. For more information, see the HotBot Help page.

Yahoo!
A searchable subject directory that indexes Web pages, news, maps, ads, stock quotes, sports scores, online businesses, phone numbers, and email addresses. Yahoo! Help.
