St. Olaf Summer International Service Learning

Students joining the Ingrian Service Learning Project were involved in a number of volunteering activities in local Ingrian Lutheran congregations including youth summer camp leadership, English language instruction, music making, simple construction and maintenance jobs, and other similar tasks. During the summers, the Ingrian Lutheran Church receives assistance from many international volunteers.

Student Selection:
Students with an interest in the value of volunteerism and who see service to others as a lifetime commitment were welcome to apply. Many specific skills and interests have been welcome, and the student profiles have influenced how the group can serve. Specific language skills are not a prerequisite, but knowledge of Russian or Finnish were be a distinct advantage for the group’s activity.

Selected students began orientation in April- May, with meetings about expectations, soem musical rehearsals, question an danswer sessions, and training sessions with guest speakers. Departure for Russia was immediately after St. Olaf graduation.

Post project activities will include meetings and presentations enabling the sharing of the experiences with the St. Olaf community fall 2005.
