U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) visited St. Olaf College on Saturday, May 3, to participate in a discussion with faculty and students on climate change initiatives in Congress and on the nation's campuses. A panel of faculty members and students shared information on research and grassroots educational activities taking place at St. Olaf.

Amy Klobuchar, the junior senator from Minnesota, serves on four Senate committees that deal with energy issues: the Environment and Public Works Committee, Agriculture Committee, Commerce Committee, and the Joint Economic Committee. She recently chaired a Senate hearing of the Environment and Public Works Committee that focused on the role of colleges and universities in addressing global climate change.

Klobuchar is the author of the American Renewable Energy Act, which would extend and expand federal tax incentives for investments in renewable energy sources such as wind power, solar energy and cellulosic alcohol. It would also establish a strong national renewable-energy standard requiring utilities to obtain 20 percent of their electricity from renewable sources by the year 2025. The bill is co-sponsored by Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) and Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.).
