Audition Requirements
Jazz auditions begin Saturday, Aug. 30, and continue until classes begin.
Interested students can sign up for an audition time outside of room 134 in the Christiansen Music Building.
The bands rehearsal schedule is as follows:
Monday & Wednesday
Jazz II 7:00 PM-8:00 PM
Jazz III 8:00 PM-9:00 PM
Jazz I 9:00 PM-10:00 PM
Saxophones, Trombones and Trumpets:
You will be asked to play a bebop tune at sight. Tunes used in the past
have included Doxy by Sonny Rollins and Au Privave by Charlie Parker.
You will also need to demonstrate your improvisation skills by
improvising over blues changes (your choice - usually F or Bb) or a
standard tune of your choosing. The audition will be accompanied by the
jazz band director on piano.
Piano, Guitar, Bass:
You will be asked to demonstrate your comping ability in a number of
different styles: swing, ballad, funk,
Afro-Cuban, Brazilian. There will also be sight reading of a melody. You
also will need to demonstrate your soloing skills by improvising over a
blues or standard jazz tune. All of this will be accompanied by the jazz
band director on piano.
Drums:
You will be asked to demonstrate your knowledge of different grooves -
medium swing, up-tempo swing, ballad (with brushes), funk, Brazilian,
Afro-Cuban. Also, you will show your sight reading ability by reading a
drum chart and providing the appropriate time feel as well as set-ups
and kicks.
