NBS Regional Fall Conference -> Sept 7&8

Overview and information at this link: NBS Fall Conference

Late Night Musings

by Todd Reemtsma, NBS Section Chairperson

There’s nothing quite like jumping in with both feet.  It was just about four years ago at the 2008 NBS Fall ToddConference at the University of Northern Iowa that I decided to get involved with the NBS Board and offer a little return of gratitude for all the years that USITT took care of me in undergrad and grad school.  Little did I realize that only a year after joining the board as Member-at-large – Metro that I would have the opportunity (and be crazy enough) to become chair of our section.  Believe it or not, I can still look at the Ben & Jerry’s quote at the bottom of this article and honestly say that I am having fun.  You certainly don’t have to become a board member to have fun and contribute to the Northern Boundary Section, but I would certainly encourage everyone to consider what they would like to get out of USITT-NBS as well as what you can offer.

2012 Summer Board meeting

On a Saturday at the beginning of July, the Northern Boundary Section board gathered together for a summer meeting.  We even decided to make a leap into the 21st Century and had a few of our board members that were unable to attend in person joined us by webinar.  The state of our finances is good and we are hoping to add a “Young Professional” scholarship in addition to the others that are offered.  We had a very good discussion about expanding our relationships with other organizations in our territory and a decision was made for USITT-NBS to join the Minnesota Theater Alliance (http://minnesotatheateralliance.org/)  and  the Minnesota Association of Community Theatres (http://mact.net) to share our resources and training opportunities.  And, of course, much of the meeting was about the upcoming 2012 Fall Conference and what we could do to help ensure its success.

2012 USITT NBS Fall Conference

The 2012 Northern Boundary Section Fall Conference will be taking place this year at the University of Minnesota – Duluth on Friday, September 7th & Saturday, September 8th.  One of the key events to kick-off the conference will be our membership meeting on Friday night.  I am hoping that a good many of you will come with ideas that will help keep USITT-NBS fun and make it a relevant and productive part of all of our lives.  We will welcome members of the Minnesota Theater Alliance to our conference and hope that this is the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship.  We have a very full slate of sessions and presenters for Saturday and we’re pretty sure that there is something for everyone if not even some difficult choices to make.  Please make sure that you look through the details on the 2012 Fall Conference in this Newsletter and share this information with others that may not currently be NBS members.

2012-13

One of the topics that I hope to bring up at our membership meeting is rebuilding our NBS website to be a more interactive and often visited source for communication amongst our membership as well as a visibility to other sections to see what we are doing and maybe even come participate in our activities.  Also at the meeting will be the formation of the Nomination Committee to put together our slate of candidates for election of the 2013 – 2016 NBS Board.  And of course, the 2013 USITT Annual Conference and Expo is practically in our back yard in Milwaukee in March, 2013.

I hope that I will see most of you next month at the Fall Conference.  Have a great start to the 2012-13 year!

If it’s not fun, why do it?
