Women's Golf finish fifth at MIAC conference

The St. Olaf Women's Golf Team persevered through the wind and rain this weekend to take 5th place in the 2002 MIAC Conference Championships. The Ole women recorded a 19 shot win over Carleton College to finish fifth place, the highest finish for the team in conference under Coach Le Ann Finger ('85).

The two-day tournament was hosted by College of Saint Benedict at The Fairways Golf Course in St. Cloud, Minnesota. All players were able to complete 18 holes on play on Saturday. Weather conditions on Sunday, however were less than favorable. Forty degree temperatures, rain and 20-30 mile per hour winds shortened play to just 9 holes of competition on Sunday.

Leading the team were juniors Naomi Schwegler (Albany, Minn.) and Abby Sprenger (Kiester, Minn.) who recorded 27-hole scores of 134 and 136 respectively. Schwegler finished 11th and Spregner finished 13th individually for the tournament, narrowly missing All-Conference Honors by two strokes.

Also contributing to the linksters were sophomores Stacia Polzin (Bloomington, Minn.) and Liz Hunt (Moline, Illinois) junior Britta Anderson (Lindstrom, Minn.) and senior Heather Mattson (Maple Grove, Minn).

The Ole women look forward to some off season conditioning and a spring break trip to Palm Springs, California, before returning to the links for the spring 2003 season.
