The St. Olaf men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened their season this past weekend, when they competed in the annual Tommy Relay's, hosted by the University of St. Thomas. This meet showcases all of the teams in the MIAC conference and provides a glimpse at what each team has in store for the season. The meet also is a great time for the teams to swim in relay events they don't usually swim and simply have a good time.

The women's team definitely proved themselves to the rest of the conference. The dynamics of the team this year should result in a successful season. The talented new group of first-year swimmers along with the veteran Oles, teamed up to provide quite a show. Although no score was kept, the women dominated the meet, winning five out of the nine relays and placing in the top three in the rest. Conference rivals Gustavus and Carleton also swam well, but the Ole women demonstrated that they have the most depth at this point in the season.

The men's team was also successful in the pool. The men won 3 events and placed in the top three in the rest of the events. Coach Dave Hauck was very encouraged by the performances of both the men's and women's team. "Although I was impressed by the team's performance in the water, it was the enthusiasm and energy out of the pool that was so great. It is still early in the season to predict anything, but if we carry this same enthusiasm and competitiveness through the rest of the season, it is bound to be an exciting year." Coach Hauck added "We swam as a team this weekend. Our success was not due to the performances of a few individuals but was due to an overall team effort."

The Oles will carry the momentum from this meet as they enter the competition phase of the season. The women will host St. Mary's University this Saturday, November 2nd, while the men will have the weekend off.
