Women's soccer defeats Augsburg

One goal was enough to give the St. Olaf women's soccer team the win on Wednesday, October 30 at 2:30pm on their home field. After a disappointing 4-0 loss to the Auggies last you on their home Astroturf, the Oles saw this as their time for retribution.

St. Olaf came out strong immediately from the kick-off, nearly scoring in the first 30 seconds of the game. For the first 10 mintues the game was played almost entirely in Augsburg's half. Then at the eighteen-minute mark, the Oles were able to find the back of the Auggie net. The kick transition from the goalie Kara Olson (FY, Oconomowoc, Wis.) rolled the ball out to the right wing middlefielder Erin Albers (Jr. Maple Plain, Minn.) who played an excellent ball to the corner for forward Brie Messick (Jr, Hastings, Minn.) to run on to. Messick's speed got her to the ball before the Augsburg defender and she made a perfect cross that found the foot of Carolyn Detjen (Sr, Juneau, Alaska). Detjen's goal would be the only scoring in the game and would also break the school's record for most career goals.

Both Augsburg and St. Olaf made several strong attacks during the second half but neither team finished. St. Olaf controlled the play enough to hang on to the win. This victory over the Auggies moves teh Oles above them in MIAC standings. The Oles now sit in fourth place with a 5-2-2 record in the conference with 12 points. Their overall record movers to 9-4-3. The Oles next game is on Saturday, November 2, at 1pm against St. Catherine on their home field.
