Oles fall to St. Thomas

For the St. Olaf Women's soccer team, St. Thomas represented one of their biggest challenges of the season. After a disappointing 4-0 loss to the Tommies last year at St. Thomas, the Oles were excited to play to them with the home field advantage. They were unable to secure a win however, as they fell 5-1 on Friday, October 25. The final score of the game doesn't truly reflect the play for either team. The game started with the teams seeming very evenly matched. However, in the 24th minute the Tommies found a loose ball off a corner kick and drove it past the Ole keeper. But the Oles didn't give up. Just three minutes later they answered with a goal of their own. The assist came from the sweeper Maiken Overton (So, Minneapolis, Minn.) who deflected a ball from a corner that Carolyn Detjen (Sr, Juneau, Alaska) finished. The game went into half time tied 1-1. The second half started much like the first. The game was very evenly played with both teams creating but not finishing opportunities. Then in the 60th minute the Tommies put another one up on the board and suddenly the floor fell out from under the Oles. The goal that put the Tommies ahead was followed by goals in the 65th and 75th minutes. The Oles never stopped battling but ultimately for a lost cause. The game that had been right at their fingertips to win was suddenly out of reach. The final nail on the coffin was a shot taken in the last 15 seconds of the game. Ole goalkeeper Kara Olson (FY, Oconomowoc, Wis.) saved the shot and was holding it when she was kicked by on of the Tommy forwards. The ball came loose and when there was no call by the ref the Tommies finished the shot and raised the score to a misleading 5-1. The Oles recorded seven shots on the game while the Tommies nearly doubled that with 12. Olson had 19 saves. This loss puts the Oles out of the running for first in the MIAC even though it's only their second conference loss. The Oles are now 3-2-2 in the conference and 7-4-3 overall.
