Goat Trophy back to Oles

The St. Olaf men's basketball team recaptured the Goat Trophy in a thrilling 71-69 overtime win over Carleton College Saturday afternoon in Northfield. Carleton had held the Goat since the 1989-90 season.

Mike Ludwig's (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) 16-foot jumper with four seconds to play in the extra session was the deciding basket in the win. Ludwig finished with a game- and season-high 25 points.

After Ludwig's bucket, the shot clock was not reset as the Knight's Scott Christenson took the inbounds pass up the floor. The buzzer sounded with two seconds to play, Christenson continued, made a three-pointer as time expired. Due to the inadvertent horn, the basket was disallowed. The Knights were unable to capitalize when they were given the ball with two seconds on the clock.

Kevin Jaunich (Sr., Delano, Minn.) hit a game-tying three-pointer with 19 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime. Jaunich finished with 11 points. Justin Bonestroo (Sr., Stillwater, Minn.) added 15 points and a career-high 13 rebounds in the win.

The Goat Trophy changes hands if the beholder is swept in the season series. The Oles defeated the Knights in overtime at Skoglund Center in December.

St. Olaf moved within a half game of the sixth and final MIAC playoff spot. Five teams, including the Oles, are within one game of fifth place.

The Oles travel to Collegeville to play Saint John's University at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Johnnies are alone in fifth place at 7-7, just one game ahead of the St. Olaf. The game can be heard on 920 AM, KDHL.
