Women's basketball drops to top team in MIAC

The St. Olaf Women?s Basketball team fell to Carleton College Knights on Saturday, February 1, 78-51. The Knights, ranked fifth in the Nation, shot 54.5 percent and went on a 19-to-2 run in the second half to take control. Carleton (18-0, 15-0), one of just four undefeated teams in America, led by just three points at the half. St. Olaf started hot, scoring the game's first eight points. The Oles shot 39.4 percent and committed only eight turnovers in the half. The Knights slowly closed the gap, connected on 12-of-19 shots from free-throw line. The Knights were up 33-30 at the break. In the second half, St. Olaf struggled to score, shooting only 31.3 percent and committing 15 more turnovers. The Oles put only 21 points on the board during the half, and Carleton got to the line ten more times. St. Olaf had only four free-throw attempts the entire contest. The Oles had 41rebounds compared to the Knight total of 42. Christine Schwichtenburg (FY, Hopkins, Minn.) scored 15 points for the Oles, and Kristy Larson (So, St. Ansgar, Iowa) added eight. Jill Johnson (Jr, Butterfield, Minn.) was lead rebounder with eight boards and fellow inside starter Mayme Cupkie (Sr, Owatonna, Minn.) had seven. The Carleton scoring attack was very balanced as seven players scored five or more points. Megan Vig led the way for the Knights with 14 points and nine rebounds.
