Ole Swimmers & Divers top St. Thomas

Both the mens and womens swimming and diving teams defeated St. Thomas University in a conference dual meet this past Friday, January 31st. The Ole women out-scored the Tommies 132-86 and the men topped the Tommies 120-89. This marked the fifth conference dual meet victory for the women, as they are undefeated in the conference this season.

The women won all 13 events against the Tommies, with 10 different Ole women winning each of the 11 individual events. Kate Blum (FY, Marshalltown, Iowa) was the only double winner, with victories in the 50 and 100-yard freestyles with times of 25.61 and 55.77, respectively.

The Ole women swimmers turned in a handful of season best times. Laura Schutt (SR, Niles, Ill.) swam to a life time best in the 1000-yard freestlye with a winning time of 10:55.80. Teammate Katie Detwiler (SO, Fort Atkinson, Wisc.) was close behind with a time of 10:57.65. In the very next event Jenna Kubat (SO, Des Moines, Iowa) kept the momentum alive with a win in the 200-yard freestyle with a season best time of 2:01.73.

The Ole women were once again impressive the 200-yard butterfly where they swept the top three places with three season best times. Sonia Karimi (SR, Rochester, Minn.) led the way with an amazing swim. Karimi dropped over three seconds on her way to capturing the win with a time of 2:16.70.

Colin Cunningham (SO, University Place, Wash.) had a great day on the boards. In the voluntary section of the 1-meter competition Cunningham turned in winning score of 166.10. Teammate Emily Koeck (SO, Fargo, N. D) took care of the optional section of the diving competition with a top score of 159.00.

Hannah Berg (FY, Edina, Minn.) and Carly Knoell (FY, Lincoln, Neb.) were also successful in their efforts. Berg?s time of 2:19.41 was good enough for first place, as was Knoell?s season best time of 5:24.96 in the 500-yard freestyle. Anna Guenther (SR, Minneapolis, Minn.) finished things off for the Oles with a win in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:31.65, which was over six seconds faster then the time of the runner up.

The men were equally successful on Friday. The team of BJ Brent (SR, Ankeny, Iowa), Grant Vanlishout (SR, Reedsville, Wisc.), Anthony Blum (JR, Marshalltown, Iowa) and JC Chambers (FY, Englewood, Colo.) fought hard in the 400-yard medley relay as they pulled off a slim victory with a time of 3:39.97.

Mark Glineburg (FY, St. Paul, Minn.) did not swim his normal events but still managed to pull of two individual victories. Glineburg won the 200-yard freestlye and the 200-yard butterfly with times of 1:48.68 and 2:02.04, respectively. Chambers was also a double winner for the men with a narrow wins in the 50 and 100-yard freestyles. (22.36, 49.93). Adam Lukens (SR, Witchita, Kan.) had a stellar day in the pool with a season best time of 2:04.89 in the 200-yard individual medley, which was good enough to earn him a first place finish by over 5 seconds.

The men welcomed back the talents of Eric Palmer (JR, Roseville, Minn.) who was traveling abroad this previous semester. Palmer was one of the top breaststrokers for the Oles last season, and will be looked to as a leader once again this year.

The Ole men and women will travel across town Saturday, February 8th to take on conference rivals Carleton at 11:00 a.m.
